Receipt Paper 101

When creating your business, receipt paper is probably not the first thing on your mind. However, knowing what type of paper is ideal for each part of your process can save you time and money in the long run. Let's take a look at the different types of paper used for business receipts.

Thermal Paper Rolls

The most popular type of paper roll used for business receipts is thermal receipt paper. This can also be called register paper, thermal paper, or POS paper. This type of paper is coated with a heat-reactive chemical that is activated by a specialized print head in a thermal printer. This results in black text or images on the receipt that requires no ink or toner. The paper is often slick and can be "drawn" on with a fingernail to mimic the printing process.

Thermal paper rolls are an economical and low effort choice for cash registers, ATMs, or handheld POS devices. It's important to keep thermal paper away from heat or direct sunlight, and to buy BPA free rolls to eliminate your risk of BPA poisoning.

Bond Paper Rolls

Another common type of paper roll is bond paper. This paper requires a printer with ink ribbons, and can be used in hot areas like above a stove or near heat lamps. For this reason, it's often used in back kitchen and expo areas in restaurants.

Carbonless Paper Rolls

The last type of paper roll is carbonless paper rolls, which come in 2-ply or 3-ply. Like bond paper, carbonless paper requires printers with ink ribbons. When the print head hits the top layer, a chemical reaction creates a duplicate copy on the additional plies. This is most often seen as a yellow (canary) copy that is given to a customer.

2-ply and 3-ply carbonless bond paper rolls are used when you want to provide a receipt for the customer while retaining a copy of your own. This is used in some food service environments or at non-profits where receipts are often requested. These paper rolls are often less economical, but they are very helpful in some use cases.
