Thermal Paper Disposal Guide
It feels like the right instinct: receipts are paper, paper goes in the recycling bin. But for the receipts coming out of most cash registers and card terminals, that instinct is wrong — and well-intentioned recycling can actually do more harm than tossing them in the trash. Here's the honest answer, and what it means for how a business handles its paper.
Why most receipts don't belong in the recycling bin
Thermal paper doesn't print with ink. It prints because the paper's coating contains a chemical developer that darkens under the print head's heat. For decades that developer was bisphenol A (BPA), and in most paper sold today it's the closely related bisphenol S (BPS).
That coating is the problem. Recycling mills can't separate the developer chemicals from the paper fiber, so when thermal receipts get pulped alongside regular paper, the bisphenols carry through into the recycled product — which is how chemicals from receipts can end up in items made from recycled pulp, like napkins, paper towels, and food packaging. They also exit the mill through wastewater. That's why a number of municipal recycling programs explicitly list thermal receipts as a contaminant and tell residents to keep them out of the bin entirely.
Don't compost them either
Composting feels even greener and is actually worse. The developer coating doesn't break down the way plain paper does, so composting thermal receipts moves those chemicals directly into soil — and if it's a garden compost, potentially into food you grow. Burning them at home is also discouraged, since heating the coating releases the phenols into the air.

So what do you actually do with them?
For standard thermal receipts, the unglamorous answer is the trash. It's the rare case where the garbage bin is the environmentally responsible choice.
For a business, though, the more useful question is upstream: what can you change so less of this paper exists in the first place?
- Print only on request where your workflow allows it. A surprising share of customers never take the receipt anyway.
- Trim your receipt template. Oversized logos, long promotional footers, and duplicate copies burn paper length on every transaction. A shorter template means fewer rolls purchased and fewer receipts thrown away — the one sustainability move that also directly cuts your supply cost.
- Rethink the paper itself — which brings us to the exception.
Does phenol-free paper change the answer?
Partially, and it's worth understanding exactly how much.
Phenol-free thermal paper uses developers with no bisphenols at all — alternatives based on ascorbic acid (vitamin C chemistry), urea-based developers, or newer technologies that skip the developer entirely. That removes the contamination concern that gets thermal paper rejected from recycling streams in the first place.
The honest caveat: acceptance still depends on your local facility. Many recyclers can't distinguish phenol-free thermal paper from standard thermal paper at the sorting line, so some programs reject all of it as a blanket rule. If recyclability matters to your operation, call your hauler or municipal program and ask specifically whether phenol-free thermal paper is accepted. Policy varies more by facility than by chemistry.
Even where the local answer is no, phenol-free paper still reduces what your staff and customers are exposed to with every receipt handled — which is why it's the direction regulation is heading anyway. What this means for your paper order
If your business fields sustainability questions from customers or runs an internal green program, your receipt paper choice determines what's even possible downstream:
Standard BPA-free thermal rolls remain the workhorse — but they belong in the trash after use, not the recycling bin, and it's worth telling your team that so good intentions don't contaminate your office paper recycling.
Phenol-free thermal rolls remove the bisphenol issue at the source, satisfy Washington's requirements, avoid Prop 65 warning obligations in California, and open the door to recyclability where local facilities accept them.
