Thermal paper is the most common receipt paper in the United States. It's coated with a heat-reactive chemical that is activated by a specialized print head in a thermal printer. This results in black text or images that require no ink or toner. Thermal paper is usually slick and can be "drawn" on with a fingernail.
For decades, thermal paper used a coating of Bisephenol A (BPA) to create the darkening effect. It has since been shown that BPA can cause health issues in those that handle or ingest it frequently. These effects are amplified by heating the chemical, which is a core part of how thermal printers operate. As a result, most reputable paper vendors stopped selling rolls with BPA.
Some suppliers have taken advantage of this, selling unregulated paper full of BPA for lower prices. They often sell on third-party sites, and their prices seem too good to be true. This is often because they're selling shortened rolls or using cheaper, more dangerous chemicals.
